The Breed's Hill institute is a non-profit organization that
fosters discovery of the revolutionary ideas of the American
founding. We believe that through the creative use of
entertainment, education and community projects, on both a
national and local
level, we can encourage appreciation for the bedrock principles of
the United States and the American Adventure they inspired.
Our goal is that all Americans may develop a lifelong passion
for their national legacy.
The sad
facts are in.
-In a recent survey
only
one in four Americans can name more than one of the five
freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment But more
than half can name at least two members of the cartoon
family The Simpsons.
-One out
of four college seniors were unable to distinguish Karl Marx's words from
the ideas of the United States Constitution.
-In
a 1999 survey of elite college seniors only
one out of five knew that the words "government of the
people, by the people, for the people" came from the
Gettysburg Address.
|
 -Forty
percent did not know that the Constitution established
the division of power between the states and the federal
government.
-To
the question of who was the American general in command at
Yorktown in the Revolutionary war, the most popular answer was Ulysses S. Grant
(a Civil war General).
We don't need to wonder if we are
developing a culturally illiterate society, we've already
done it. Not one of the 55 universities polled in the
above study requires a course in United States history. Breed's Hill Institute
is dedicated to finding new ways to tell the American
story and ignite excitement for our shared heritage.
